Beside the theme country every year in the Festival Tasting room of the Vancouver International Wine Festival, there are all the other wineries from countries around the world offering their wines for you to try. Below are 15 wines that I thought were excellent. Some may be in BC liquor stores and others may have only been available during the Festival. Enjoy.
Sparkling Wine
Bortolomiol Jus Naturae Prosecco Superiore 2015, Veneto, Italy – Light stone fruit nose. High acidity with biting bubble. Stone fruit and apples. An elegant sparkling wine.
Giusti Wine Asolo Prosecco Brut DOCG NV, Veneto, Italy – Medium body, dry with small, creamy bubble. Apples and stone fruit flavours. Very good.
Mondo del Vino Cuvage Nebbiolo Alba DOC Rose VSQ Metodo Classico NV, Piedmont, Italy – Pear skin colour with light stone fruit nose. Dry, small bubble, and citrus and apples on the palate. Elegant.
Santa Margherita Brut Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG NV, Italy – Toasty, stone fruit nose.U Medium creamy bubble, off-dry.with stone fruit and citrus flavours. Good quality.
Sieur d’Arques Aguila – AOP Cremant de Limoux, France – Nice citrus and stone fruit aromas. Dry, medium acidity with lifted stone fruit aromas. Tasty. I bought several bottles of this bubble.
White Wine
Whitehaven Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2016, New Zealand – Green fruit nose. Medium body, soft and dry with integrated acidity and minerality. Stone fruit and green fruit flavours.
Whitehaven Greg Sauvignon Blanc, Single Vineyard Awatere Valley 2015, New Zealand – Very asparagus nose and on the palate. Dry with medium acidity and minerality.
Stoneleigh Latitude Sauvignon Blanc 2016, New Zealand – Lots of green fruit on the nose, together with some petrol. Dry, medium body and light mouth feel. Green fruit, jalapeno and honey on the palate. Nice.
Bodega Garzon Albarino 2015, Uruguay – Nice floral and stone fruit nose. Medium minus body, dry with medium acid. Stone fruit and light sweet spice on the palate.
Bodega Garzon Viognier 2016, Uruguay – Lush, ripe sweet stone fruit and a hint of honey on the nose. Dry, medium body, round, with medium plus mouth feel. Light stone fruit, oak and some flintiness. Elegant.
Red Wine
Vina Errazuriz Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve 2013, Chile – Dark fruit, dark chocolate and a hint of capsicum on the nose. Full body, round with medium acidity and fine tannins. Ripe black fruit and cassis flavour.
Vina Ventisquero Vertice Carmenere/Syrah 2012, Chile – Deep ruby colour. Ripe, juicy cassis nose along with a hint of capsicum. Dry, full body, soft and smooth with medium tannins. Ripe cassis, black cherry and plum flavours.
Bodega Garzon Tannat 2014, Uruguay – Deep garnet. Really floral, plus cassis on the nose. Full body, soft with ripe cassis, nutmeg and ripe juicy fruit and sweet spice on the palate. Mineral.
Kenwood Vineyards Six Ridges Pinot Noir 2014, California – Pale garnet in the glass. Nice light red cherry nose. Light body, with red fruit, floral and cranberry flavours. Soft tannins. Very elegant.
Kenwood Vineyards Jack London Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, California – Deep garnet colour. Capsicum and dark fruit nose. Medium plus body, round with firm tannins. Juicy cassis, vanilla and capsicum flavours. Drying tannins on the finish. Good quality.
