R&R with BC’s Adega on 45th Estate Winery_PR SAMPLE

We all need R&R sometime.  I have two for you today from Osoyoos’ Adega on 45th Estate Winery.  I received their Adega on 45th Estate Winery Riesling 2025 and Rosé 2025.  Both wines come from our terrific and well-deserved 2025 vintage.

The winery founded by siblings Maria Nunes and Fred Farinha, alongside their spouses, the European-inspired property was named “Adega” (Portuguese for “cellar”) to honour their family heritage.  In March 2025, Gate 22 Winery acquired the 19-acre estate, vineyards, and brand, led by Christa-Lee McWatters.  Their winemaker is Karen Yeung.  Beyond what is in the bottle, I note what is on the bottle label.  There is a Portuguese-styled embossed design on each label, which I think is a nice acknowledgement of Marina and Fred, plus it makes the bottle more noticeable.

Here are my tasting notes for these two wines.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Adega on 45th Estate Winery Riesling 2025 (BC $26.99)

This wine is made from Riesling grapes, which were whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks before bottling. Whole-cluster pressed means that the grapes are not destemmed.  The whole bunch is pressed, giving you the grape must but you also get some of the stems’ tannins, and depending on how green or mature (brown) the stems are, they can offer varied flavours (e.g. herbaceous, spicy, woody) to the wine.

Appearance:  Clear, bright, medium-plus lemon colour in the glass.
Nose: Medium-intensity aroma of toast (from grape stem), along with touches of lime and peach.  After decanting, the wine aromas were mainly toast and apple.
Palate:  Dry, medium-bodied with a smooth, dense mouthfeel.  Very tart acidity, but without acidic prickle. Pronounced flavours of dried fruit (apricot in particular), apple, lime, and grape stem toastiness/bitterness.  The wine became lighter-bodied and had a leaner, lighter  mouthfeel after decanting.  The toasty flavour also lessened.
Finish:  Medium-plus length finishing with tart citrus and apple flavours, plus grape stem bitterness.  The wine had a touch of stone fruit flavours after decanting and lessened bitterness.

This Riesling, when first opened, has quite strong toasty aromas and flavours.  Decanting fortunately lessens the toastiness, allowing you to taste more of the fruit flavours.  This wine has quite strong acidity and tartness, so I would recommend letting this wine age in your cellar for a few years to let the acidity mellow out a bit.  If you do want to drink this wine now, have it with food, particularly food that has some fattiness to it, like sausages, to soften the acidity.

Rating: ****o with decanting. The Adega on 45th Estate Winery Riesling 2025 shows a bright medium-plus lemon colour with medium aromas of toast, lime, and peach, with the aromas shifting toward toast and apple after decanting. The palate is dry and medium-bodied with a smooth, dense mouthfeel and very tart acidity, offering pronounced dried apricot, apple, lime, and grape stem toastiness and bitterness, while decanting gives the wine a lighter body and mouthfeel. It finishes medium-plus in length with tart citrus and apple flavours and grape stem bitterness, with some stone fruit and less bitterness after decanting.

Adega on 45th Estate Winery Rosé 2025 (BC $24.99)

This wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes, which were whole-cluster pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks before bottling.

Appearance:  A clear, bright, medium-intensity orange-salmon colour.
Nose: Medium-intensity aromas of red fruit, toast, red cherries, some matchstick, and grapefruit with air.  No change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate:  This wine is dry, medium-plus bodied with a smooth, soft, thicker mouthfeel.  Medium acidity and light tannins.  Tart red berries, raspberries, and strong grape stem toastiness and bitterness.  Pink grapefruit and rhubarb flavours come out with swirling.  The wine has less bitterness, toastiness, and tartness after decanting.  The fruit flavours and body are unchanged.
Finish:  Medium-plus length finishing with red fruit, raspberries, red cherries, rhubarb, and grape stem bitterness.  With decanting, the bitterness lessens, and I get a touch of pepperiness on the palate.

Decanting is also recommended for this Rosé wine.  Decanting helps soften and lessen the toastiness and bitterness that comes from the grape stems.

Rating: ****o with decanting.  The Adega on 45th Estate Winery Rosé 2025 shows a bright orange-salmon colour with medium aromas of red fruit, toast, red cherry, and matchstick, along with grapefruit emerging with swirling. The palate is dry and medium-plus in body with a smooth, soft, thicker mouthfeel, offering tart red berries, raspberry, red cherry, grapefruit, and rhubarb with strong grape stem toastiness and bitterness, which lessens after decanting. It finishes medium-plus in length with red fruit, raspberry, red cherry, rhubarb, and grape stem bitterness, and a touch of pepperiness appearing after decanting.
