This is the third release from Winemaker’s CUT from Oliver, BC by Michal and Martina Mosny. I congratulate them on their dedication to these small production wines and the quality that they deliver in the bottle. They undertake sustainable farming, hand harvest their grapes, adhere to zero pesticides, low sulphur use, and let the wines develop naturally to express the characteristics of their Deadman Lake Vineyard. If you think you hear classical music as you sip these wines it could be because they play classical music in the vineyards and the wine cellar. I happily recommend any of the wines that I have tasted from them.
My Review of Winemaker’s CUT Third Release Wines
Winemaker’s CUT Sauvignon Blanc 2018 ($26) – is partially fermented (15%) in Slovenian oak barrels. The wine is a medium bright lemon-green in colour. It has ripe stone fruit aromas with a touch of lime, orange, and bramble leaf. The wine is slightly off-dry, very flavorful and has a light acidic prickle. Medium-plus body. A mix of stone fruit and green fruit flavours along with some bramble leaf and a hint of orange. The wine has a waxy round texture. A long lingering stone fruit and citrus flavour finish. You also get some salty minerality and light pepperiness on the finish. With decanting the wine feels drier and you get more green fruit flavour toward the finish.
Rating: A delightful Sauvignon Blanc that shows ripe stone fruit on the nose and palate, and has a long lingering finish.
Winemaker’s CUT Rosé 2018 ($22) – is made from 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Syrah and is fermented in stainless steel tanks. This wine has a quite light peach skin colour. It has lifted aromas of rhubarb, red fruit, and a lesser amount of bramble leaf. With decanting you get light strawberry, honey and floral aromas as well. This wine is off-dry with a medium-plus body and has an acidic prickle to it. Waxy mouthfeel as well. The wine starts off with tart red fruit, red cherries and rhubarb flavours. The acidity drops mid-palate then the flavours change more to light red cherry and bramble leaf + the wine feels a touch sweeter. You also get light oak in the background. With decanting the bramble leaf flavour diminishes and you get honey, crisp red apple, apricot and red fruit flavours, which really amazed me. Medium-plus length finishing with mouthwatering acidity some sweetness with flavours of red fruits and bramble leaf. Another delightful wine to drink, which should also be very easy to pair with food.
Rating: – A Rosé wine that actually gets better with decanting! Give this rosé wine some air and you will be enjoying honey, crisp red apple, apricot and red fruit flavours.
Winemaker’s CUT Pinot Noir 2018 ($38) – is medium garnet in colour. Very translucent to the core. Between medium-plus and pronounced intensity nose starts with smoky raspberries followed by sweet ripe red fruit and then sausage at the end. With some air, it becomes floral which then fades away and you get sweet spices and tea leaves on the nose. With a longer decant you get lots of bramble and smoky raspberry aromas. It has very good fruit to acid to tannin harmony. The wine is dry lighter-bodied with medium intensity floral and red fruit flavours, and you get some raspberry flavours after the red fruit. The wine has a medium-plus length and finishes dry. Red fruit flavours on the finish along with oak some toastiness and sweet spices. With decanting the wine has some pepperiness as well on the finish. A great structured Pinot Noir.
Rating: – A great structured Pinot Noir with an everchanging nose of red fruit, floral and sweet spices. Floral and red fruit flavours.Very good balance of fruit, acid, and tannins. No need to decant this wine.
Winemaker’s CUT Syrah 2017 ($34) – is 99% opaque ruby with some garnet in colour. The wine has a medium intensity nose of smokiness, black pepper, ripe cassis and black fruit. With decanting you also get sausage and nutmeg. An intense nose. The wine is slightly off-dry, semi-soft and round with a medium minus mouthfeel. Fine structured medium intensity tannins that get stronger on the finish. Cassis, black fruit, smokiness and oak on the palate. Lifted fruit flavours. Some sweet spices as well. You also can find some ripe raspberry flavour and black plums in this wine, which get stronger if you decant the wine. Decanting also brings out floral violets on the palate. It has a medium to long length finishing with salty minerality and mouthwatering acidity. Ripe cassis, smokiness and oak on the finish. A solid Syrah with a great nose and lifted black fruit flavours.
Rating: Quality. A solid Syrah. Great nose with ripe cassis, smoke and black pepper. Lifted black fruit flavours and an everpresent salty minerality. Medium tannins that firm up on the finish. No need to decant this wine, but you can to get a wider variety of fruit flavours.
Winemaker’s CUT Gruner Veltliner 2018 ($28) – A pale lemon with a tinge of green in the glass. This wine upon opening has pronounced aromas of primarily grapefruit rind with a touch of peach, but with a little air it evolves to more stonefruit, and with longer decanting the grapefruit rind aroma diminishes significantly. The wine is slightly off-dry, medium-plus body with medium-plus acidity and flavour intensity. It has an acidic prickle that lasts to the finish, but with decanting softens. There is a blend of citrus, citrus rind, green fruit and stone fruit flavours to start, and then adds some tropical fruit and bramble leaf upon first tasting. With decanting the tropical fruit flavour is no longer present and you get a prominent melon flavour. The wine has a steeliness toward the finish. On the finish, you get a blend of sweet and tart citrus flavours along with some bramble leaf. With decanting the wine becomes peppery on the finish. You can give this wine a little decant time but not too much.
Rating: A wine that starts with citrus but evolves toward stone fruit aromas and flavours. Medium-bodied with an acidic prickle to the finish.
