Blasted Church’s Hatfield’s Fuse and Pinot Gris 2024 for the Holidays

In case you haven’t heard, Okanagan’s Blasted Church Vineyards is having a case sale on their Renaissance wines from now till Dec 14.  I’m tasting two of their Renaissance series wines I received.  Hatfield’s Fuse 2024 and Pinot Gris 2024.  Both wines are made in BC, but use grapes that come from Washington state, to cover our cold winter snap in 2024 that killed many Okanagan grape vines.  Note that these wines, and their other Renaissance series wines, are on sale for the holidays.  Details after my tasting notes.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Blasted Church Hatfield’s Fuse 2024 (BC $22)

Winemaker’s notes, “The fruit for the 2024 Hatfield’s Fuse was sourced from the Sustainable WA certified Andrews Family Vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA in Washington State. Each block of fruit was harvested separately at its ideal combination of sugar, acid, and flavour…The Pinot Gris brings orchard fruit and stone fruit as well as a boost to the texture of the overall blend, the Riesling brings brilliant acidity and a beautiful citrus component, and the Viognier brings a floral character, while also having a huge contribution towards the mouthfeel of the blend…”

Appearance: A bright, clear, medium intensity lemon colour.
Nose:  Light aromas of mint, tropical fruit, and some grape stem.  The aromas get a little stronger after decanting.
Palate: Dryish, medium-plus body with a round mouthfeel.  Medium acidity leaves a light acidic prickle.  Tropical fruits, some grape stem and then touches of mint and orange with swirling.  Add a touch of lime skin to the mentioned flavours after decanting.
Finish:  Medium-plus to long length finishing with tropical fruits and grape stem, plus touches of mint and orange.  Add a touch of honey to the finish after decanting.

Fresh flavours.  No need to decant.

Rating: ****o****.*  Blasted Church Hatfield’s Fuse 2024 shows a medium lemon colour and offers light mint, tropical fruit, and grape stem on the nose, all gaining a bit more intensity after decanting. The dryish palate has a rounded mouthfeel with tropical fruit at the core, touches of mint and orange, and added lime skin after some air. The medium-plus to long finish carries the same tropical fruit and grape stem notes, joined by hints of honey once the wine opens up.

Blasted Church Pinot Gris 2024 (BC $24)

Winemaker’s notes, “The Pinot Gris was grown on a gentle north-facing slope, a rarity in the Horse Heaven Hills, at Andrews Family Vineyards, a member of Sustainable WA…The fruit was harvested on September 24th, and after a two-hour cold soak, the juice was pressed to tank to settle before being racked and transferred to our cellar in temperature-controlled trucks…Upon arrival in our cellar, the juice was racked into tanks to cold settle further prior to fermentation. Each tank was given a slightly different treatment, allowing us to put together a nuanced wine with all the orchard fruit and stone fruit notes, acidity, and balance that is so reminiscent of our Okanagan Valley-sourced Pinot Gris...”

Appearance:  A bright, medium intensity pear skin colour in the glass.
Nose:  Medium-plus aromas of ripe pears and other stone fruits.  Touches of honey, grape stem, and stoniness.  Medium intensity aromas after decanting.
Palate: This wine is dry, medium-plus body with a round, thicker mouthfeel.  Pears and stoniness on the palate.  No change to the flavours or body after decanting.
Finish:  Medium-plus to long length finishing with pears and stoniness on the palate and touches of pepperiness and hotness.  No change to the finish after decanting.

Tropical fruits on the nose and palate together with bright acidity.  Decanting only increases aromas, so no need to decant.

Rating: ****o****.*  Blasted Church Pinot Gris 2024 shines with ripe pear and stone fruit on the nose, touched by honey, grape stem, and a light mineral note that continues after decanting. The dry, rounded palate follows through with pear and stoniness in a fuller mouthfeel. The medium-plus to long finish carries the same pear-driven and stony profile with a hint of pepper and hotness, unchanged with air.
