I have two top quality, vegan-friendly red wines to tell you about from Winemaker’s CUT. I opened their Winemaker’s CUT Bohemian Syrah 2020 and Bohemian Pinot Noir 2020. Why Bohemian?
Bohemian wines are single vineyard blends made in extremely small volumes. The wines come from their finest barrels and only are produced when the vintage is appropriate. They also play classical music in their vineyards and at the winery, which they find helps make better wine. Very Bohemian.
The winery is in Oliver, BC, where you can visit, but they also have a Tasting Room at the District Wine Village where you can try their wines. Let me tell you about these two wines.
My Wine Tasting Notes
Winemaker’s CUT Bohemian Pinot Noir 2020 (BC $37)
This wine spent 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels some neutral oak.
Appearance: Medium intensity, clear to the core garnet colour.
Nose: Lighter aromas of red cherries, raspberries and a touch of toast. Add a hint of candied red fruit or red liquorice with swirling. The aromas appear stronger with decanting and make them more enjoyable.
Palate: Dryish, smooth and round with a light mouthfeel. Red fruit and red cherry flavours along with some rose, oak, and leather. Light tannins that get firmer from the mid-palate to the finish. With decanting the tannins become lighter. To the mentioned flavours, you can add raspberries.
Finish: Medium-plus length with light fine tannins. Red fruit, red cherries and a touch of mace spice. You get a touch of leather and some pepperiness on the finish with decanting, and no mace spice.
An elegant Pinot Noir. The decanted version is maybe a touch nicer. Enjoy either way.
Rating: –
Medium intensity, translucent to the core, garnet colour. Lighter aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and touches of toast and candied red fruit. Dryish, medium body, smooth and round mouthfeel. Red fruit, red cherries, roses and a touch of leather and oak. Medium-plus length.

Winemaker’s CUT Bohemian Syrah 2020 (BC $40)
Made with 92% Syrah and 8% Viognier, co-fermented. Viognier, a white grape, adds a floral component to the Syrah and helps make the colour of the wine deeper. The wine spent 10 months in a mix of Slovakian, American, and French oak barrels.
Appearance: A deep, dull ruby colour, about 90% opaque almost to the rim.
Nose: Light aromas of black fruit, and touches of nutmeg, black pepper, and black olives. With decanting you can add the aroma of black plums.
Palate: Off-dry, medium-body, with medium acidity and quite light, fine-grained tannins. Flavours of black fruit, raspberries and blackberries, black tea leaves and touches of floral, nutmeg, and oak. The flavour intensity picks up a bit with decanting. I now detect black olives on the palate and the nutmeg spice changes to mace.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing off-dry with soft fine tannins. Ripe black fruit flavour with a touch of black pepper, nutmeg and oak. The tannins are stronger on the finish after decanting, plus I now taste black olives.
I have no preference for decanted or undecanted versions of this wine. Open and enjoy.
Rating: –
Almost opaque ruby colour. Light aromas of black fruit, nutmeg and black pepper. Off-dry, round and soft with a light acidic prickle. Black fruit, blackberries, raspberries, and floral plus a touch of oak on the palate. Black olives on the nose and palate after decanting. Medium-plus length with softer tannins on the finish.
