Tasting the Township 7 Interlude Select Sauvignon Blanc 2024 and Provenance Series Cabernet Merlot 2022PR SAMPLE

You may have noticed that I had not posted anything wine related for the last 2 weeks, as I was away, but now I’m back, and have my first two wines to tell you about from BC’s Township 7 Vineyards & Winery.  I opened their Interlude Select Sauvignon Blanc 2024 and  their Provenance Series Cabernet Merlot 2022.  The Interlude Select Sauvignon Blanc 2024 comes from grapes imported from the Bacchus Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope in Washington state as the 2024 winter freeze devastated the BC Okanagan grapevines, producing little to no grapes.  The Provenance Cabernet Merlot 2022 wine is made with 100% BC grapes.  Let me tell you about these wines.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Township 7 Vineyards & Winery Interlude Select Sauvignon Blanc 2024 (BC $33.97)

Winemaker’s notes, “Sourced from the historic Bacchus Vineyard in Washington, originally planted in 1972 on a mix of sandy loam soils, these hand-picked grapes were 100% fermented in French oak barriques for six months <MyWinePal: Crafted In BC>. Regular bâtonnage during fermentation, followed by gentle stirring as the wine matured, imparts a full, rounded mouthfeel that perfectly balances its bright, lively acidity.”

Appearance:  A medium-minus intensity, bright and clear mix of lemon and straw colours.
Nose:  Deep, medium intensity aromas of stones, tropical fruit, and touches of toast, orange, and bramble leaf. Same aromas and intensity, plus add a touch of honey.
Palate:  This wine is dry, medium-plus body and flavour intensity, along with a smooth, rich and creamy, thicker mouthfeel.  Medium-plus acidity leaves a light prickle in your mouth.  Tropical fruit, plus a touch of orange, lemon pith and oak on the palate.  The wine is also quite peppery.  A lighter, medium body, lighter mouthfeel and less peppery on the palate after decanting.  Pineapple flavour is also more evident.
Finish:  Medium-plus to long length finishing with tropical fruit, citrus pith, and pepperiness.  Less pepper and less pith bitterness after decanting.  Light flavours on decanting.

Although I like the richness of the undecanted version of this wine, I feel that the decanted version with a lighter touch on the palate is my choice.

Rating: ****o****.* decanted. Township 7 Vineyards and Winery Interlude Select Sauvignon Blanc 2024 opens with medium intensity aromas, stony and tropical fruits, layered with touches of toast, citrus, and a hint of honey. Undecanted, the palate is dry with a medium plus body and a rich, creamy mouthfeel, showing tropical fruit, orange, lemon pith, oak, and noticeable pepperiness, which become lighter and more pineapple driven after decanting. It finishes medium plus to long with tropical fruit and citrus pith, ending cleaner and less peppery after decanting.

Township 7 Vineyards & Winery Provenance Series Cabernet Merlot 2022 (BC $31.97)

A blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 22% Merlot from the Raju Vineyard, Osoyoos and the Front Yard Vineyard, Naramata.  Winemaker’s notes, “This blend highlights the distinct terroirs of Naramata and Osoyoos in the South Okanagan, bringing together the best of both sites. Carefully selected barrel groups were chosen to create a fruit-forward
wine with soft tannins and intricate complexity. The grapes underwent a 14-day fermentation using pigeage and delestage techniques to enhance rich fruit expression. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 18 months in a mix of American and French oak…”

Appearance:  This wine has a deep, garnet colour.
Nose:  Light aromas of black and red fruit, blackberries, cinnamon, and toasty oak.  No change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate:  Dry, medium body with a lighter mouthfeel; lean and smooth.  Juicy berries, black fruit and a hint red fruit and oak, along with some earthiness and bitterness.  Medium-plus drying tannins.  After decanting, everything lightens up a bit, including the tannins and the earthiness /  bitterness, which I appreciate.
Finish:  Medium-plus length finishing with quite firm drying oaky tannins, black fruit, and some dark chocolate bitterness as well as earthiness.  Lighter tannins and less earthiness after decanting.

I prefer the decanted version of this wine as the earthiness and bitterness on the palate has lessened, letting the fruit flavours be more prominent and enjoyable.

Rating: ****o decanted.  Township 7 Vineyards and Winery Provenance Series Cabernet Merlot 2022 shows light aromas of black and red fruits, blackberries, cinnamon, and toasty oak. The palate is dry and medium bodied with a lean, smooth mouthfeel, offering juicy berries, black fruit, touches of red fruit and oak, plus earthy and bitter notes that soften with decanting. It finishes medium plus in length with firm, drying oaky tannins, black fruit, and hints of dark chocolate, becoming lighter and less earthy after decanting.
