Quick Review: Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars Estate Cuvee Gamay Noir 2022PR SAMPLE

Gamay Noir is a grape that gets little respect. Some people may equate it to Beaujolais Nouveau, but it can be much more. BC wineries make quality Gamay Noir. A point in case is this bottle; Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellarss Estate Cuvée Gamay Noir 2022. The grapes were hand harvested, then cold soaked and fermented using indigenous yeasts to the vineyard.  Fermentation and aging in neutral oak barrels for 12 months then cellared in bottle for an additional 6 months. My tasting notes follow.

Blue Mountain Estate Cuvee Gamay Noir 2022 with wine in glass
Blue Mountain Estate Cuvee Gamay Noir 2022 with wine in glass

Appearance: A translucent, clear medium-intensity garnet colour. Teardrops on the glass from swirling.
Nose: Medium-plus aromas of toast/smoke, red fruits, and hints of bramble, bramble leaf, and black tea. No change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate: This wine is dry and soft with a smooth mouthfeel. It starts off with a lighter mouthfeel but bumps up to medium and gets rounder with swirling. Light red fruit to start which evolves into sweeter red fruit with swirling. You also get hints of floral, roasted herbs and some bitter savouriness from the mid-palate to the finish.  The wine stays at medium body and roundness with decanting.  The wine now has a smoky/toasty and mineral component and some pepperiness from the mid-palate to the finish. The floral note disappears with decanting.
Finish: A medium to medium-plus length finishing with smoky/toastiness, red fruits, light pepper, black tea, some savouriness and medium-minus oak tannins. No change to the length or flavours after decanting.

A wine with a unique aroma and flavour profile. A  wine that shows its terroir.  No need to decant.

Rating: 4.5 stars A translucent medium-intensity garnet colour in the glass.  Medium-plus aromas with toast/smoke, red fruits, plus bramble and tea leaves.  A dry wine with a soft, smooth mouthfeel.  Red fruit flavours, along with roasted herbs and some savouriness.  Medium to medium-plus length.
