We are set for a mini-heatwave, Friday – Sunday, this week. So get out and enjoy the sun on your patio, and maybe these two bright, fresh wines from Gold Hill Winery in Oliver, BC. I have their Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc Rosé, both from the 2021 vintage. Let me tell you about them.
My Wine Tasting Notes
Gold Hill Winery Sauvignon Blanc 2021 (BC$29.99)
Appearance: A lighter, clear lemon with a green tinge.
Nose: Medium intensity aromas of green fruit, limes, grapefruit, and guava. These aromas seem sweeter with decanting.
Palate: Dry and round, with medium plus body and medium acidity. Green fruit, citrus, crisp apple, guava, and some nettles on the palate. A touch of stony minerality toward the finish. A little lighter, smoother mouthfeel with decanting. More minerality and tropical fruit flavours, plus a touch of honey.
Finish: Finishes dry, with flavours of tart green fruit, grapefruit pith, and then some lemon and honey with time in the glass. No major change on the finish after decanting, other than the wine finishes with a touch of pepperiness.
A fresh and fruity Sauvignon Blanc, not too tart. Just right. Open and enjoy at your leisure.
Rating: A refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. Lighter, bright lemon with a green tint in the glass. Medium-plus body, dry and round mouthfeel. Medium acidity. Citrus, green fruit, crisp apple, guava, and some nettles on the palate. Medium-plus length finishing with tart green fruit and grapefruit pith. Some honey at lemon at the very end.
Gold Hill Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2021 (BC $29.99)
Appearance: A medium-plus clear orange salmon colour in the glass.
Nose: Medium-minus intensity aromas of red fruit, some flint, raspberries and a touch of capsicum with air. Similar aromas when decanted, but no capsicum and add red cherries.
Palate: Off-dry, round with a medium-plus body. The wine starts off with expansive tiny acidic prickle on your tongue, then becomes smooth and then transitions to pepperiness. Red fruit and smoky bacon plus a touch of capsicum with air. Less smoky bacon flavour with decanting. Mainly red fruit, sweet red berries and some toastiness.
Finish: Medium-plus length finishing off-dry with red fruit, smoky bacon and pepperiness. About the same flavours with decanting except less smoky bacon.
If you like smoky bacon flavour in your wine, go for the undecanted version of this wine.
Rating: – A deeper clear orange salmon colour. Medium-minus aromas of red fruit, raspberries and flint. Medium-plus body, off-dry and round mouthfeel. Expansive acidic prickle on your tongue to smart which smoothes out then gets peppery. Red fruit, smoky bacon and a touch of capsicum on the palate when freshly poured in your glass. Medium-plus length finishing with sweet red fruit, smoky bacon and pepperiness.
