Two Aromatic White Wines from Singletree Winery

It’s getting to be time to enjoy aromatic white wines. The cherry blossoms are out and the weather coming up looks to be sunny for several days. I have two white wines from Singletree Winery in the Abbotsford area. Their Singletree Winery Siggy 2020 and Singletree Winery Gruner Veltliner 2020. Let me tell you about them.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Singletree Winery Siggy 2020 (BC $17.80)

Siggy is Singletree’s shorthand word for the grape’s full name, Siegerrebe, which hails from Germany. Siegerrebe was created by German viticulturalist Dr. Georg Scheu (1879-1949) in 1929 at a grape-breeding institute in Alzey in Rheinhessen, by crossing Madeleine Angevine and Gewürztraminer (https://www.gbvg.uk/grape/siegerrebe).

Appearance: A pale, but bright straw colour.
Nose: A pronounced nose with herbaceous aroma primarily, with lesser amounts of stone fruits, and touches of lychee, lime, and rose with air. You still get pronounced herbaceous aromas with the addition of pine needles with decanting.  There were still lychee and stone fruit aromas, but no lime or rose.
Palate: Semi-sweet, medium-plus body with a light acidic prickle that fades towards the mid-palate. Lots of lychee, apricot, lime, grapefruit pith, and a touch of grape stem flavours. Almost the same mouthfeel and flavours intensity with decanting.  The only difference I noted was no lime flavour.
Finish: A medium length finishing with citrus, pith, and tart stone fruit flavours. Still off-dry on the finish with decanting; grapefruit pith and lychee flavours, and rose petal at the very end.

No big changes with decanting, so just open and enjoy.  This wine is a bit sweeter than off-dry.  Maybe try with a Chinese stir fry or a curry dish.

Rating: 3.5 stars A light straw colour.  Quite aromatic; herbaceous and stone fruit aromas, plus a touch of lychee, lime and rose petal. Medium sweet, with higher acidity that leaves a light acidic prickle on your tongue.  Lychee, apricot, lime and grapefruit pith flavours.

Singletree Winery Gruner Veltliner 2020 (BC $19)

This grape is most widely planted in Austria.  According to Wikipedia, “In 2007, DNA analysis confirmed that Grüner Veltliner was a natural crossing of Savagnin (Traminer) and an obscure Austrian grapevine from the village of Sankt Georgen am Leithagebirge located outside Eisenstadt in the Burgenland region of eastern Austria.”

Appearance: A bright, medium-plus intensity lemon colour.
Nose: Lighter aromas, primarily ripe stone fruits / peach, with lesser citrus, and a touch of honey, lime, and apple with air. More aromatic with decanting; primarily peach and lime, less apple.
Palate: Dry, medium body, lean mouthfeel. High, bracing acidity but still has some softness. Bright fruit flavours; peach and crisp apple, with some steeliness and a touch of grape stem. Same body and mouthfeel, and flavours with decanting.
Finish: Medium-plus length with peach and tart apple flavour, plus a touch of grape stem. No change with decanting.

With the higher level of acidity, I would pair this wine with food, if you drink it now, or you can cellar it for 4-5 years to let the acidity soften.  Give this wine a try with sushi or sashimi, or a chicken dish made with dill or tarragon herbs.

Rating: 4 stars A refreshing, bracing white wine.  Medium-plus, bright lemon colour.  Lighter aromas of ripe stone fruit with lesser amounts of citrus honey, apple, and lime.  Dry with high acidity and medium mouthfeel.  Some steeliness, apple, peach, and grape stem toward the finish.
