The other day, I opened up a bottle I’ve had since earlier this summer – Grange of Prince Edward Chardonnay Sur Lie 2019.  So what’s Sur Lie mean?

“Sur Lie” means that the wine has been kept in contact with the dead yeast cells and is not racked or otherwise filtered. This is usually only noted with white wines (since it’s a normal practice with red wines), and this winemaking decision is made to give additional complexities and characteristics to the finished product. Aside from being made “sur lie”, this chardonnay is also vegan.

So now, back to this very cool chardonnay for the tasting notes!

Aromas that hit me included honeycomb, beeswax, lemon, twigs, and a touch of gooseberries. Are you intrigued yet?

On the palate, it had a balanced contrast of bright and earthy that married so well together. And the finish on the wine reminded me of a cool ocean breeze. Such a unique sip!

Have you ever tried a white wine made sur lie? Any favourites to share?
