This will be an unusual Mother’s Day for us all. Those of you who live in the same city as your mom can visit her on Mother’s Day, safely. For those of us that live in different cities, phoning/skyping/zooming are all we can offer to speak to our mothers. No more flying out to visit her for the weekend. Sending your mom to a restaurant and covering the expense of the meals is also not possible during COVID-19. But what can we do? We can still treat our mothers with a nice meal and with wine, or other beverage that you know she likes.
While you may be in Vancouver, like me, and your mom in another city, you can still use meal delivery services, like DoorDash or Skip the Dishes, to get a nice meal delivered to your mother. Some of the restaurants using these types of delivery services also offer that wines and beers that they serve in the restaurant can be delivered along with the meals. You do need to sign up to get an account with these delivery services. For restaurants you could select one that has branches across Canada, or parts of Canada, like JOEY Restaurants. They offer both food and beverages delivered.
If you are in the same city as your mom, you could still make use of ordering food, but you can pick it up and bring wine either from the restaurant, or you can buy wine from one of the local government or private liquor stores. If you need some ideas for wines to buy for Mother’s Day, here are a few of my BC wine suggestions:
Lake Breeze Vineyards Pinot Gris 2018 – Stone fruit mixed with citrus and grapefruit rind aromas. The wine is dryish, fuller-bodied, round with medium acidity. Grapefruit and rind with honey toward the finish. Very tasty.
Meyer Family Vineyards McLean Creek Road Chardonnay 2017 – Light toasty nose along with apple aromas. Butterscotch and tropical fruit flavours, along with toast and oak. The wine has a medium body, is smooth, lower acidity and buttery mouthfeel. Yum.
Bonamici Cellars Pinot Grigio 2018 – Ripe fresh stone fruit nose. Off-dry, semi-sweet with a medium body. Honey and stone fruit flavours.
Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards Fitz Brut 2015 – This sparkling wine has a light toasty apple nose. It is dry, with high acidity and small biting bubbles. Crisp apple and toasty flavours. Not meant for sipping on its own at the moment. Enjoy with seafood or a cheese platter.
Harper’s Trail Chardonnay Sparkling 2016 (Traditional method sparkling) ($26) – A quality sparkling wine. Nice bready and roasted apple nose. Creamy fine bubble. Toast and crisp apple flavour, with tart acidity and some pepperiness toward the finish.
Haywire Baby Bub 2018 (375 ml so mom doesn’t have to share) – This sparkling rose wine is all about the creamy biting bubble (texture) followed closely by the tart red fruit and McIntosh apple flavour.
C.C. Jentsch Cellars Syrah 2016 – Medium-plus intensity ruby colour. It has a nice raspberry and toasty nose. It is dry and soft with a medium minus body. Silky mouthfeel. Raspberries and light touches of vanilla and pepperiness. Off-dry finish.
Robin Ridge Winery Merlot 2014 – This wine has a deep garnet colour. It has ripe delicious apples and juicy red fruit aromas. Apple, bruised apple, and red fruit flavours. The wine is slightly off-dry with medium acidity that provides the backbone to this wine. Some pepperiness toward the finish.
Lake Breeze Vineyards Meritage 2017 – This wine is a blend of Merlot (45%), Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Cabernet Franc (20%), and Malbec (10%). It has a nice juicy black fruit nose. The wine is full-bodied and has a round, off-dry mouthfeel. It is very fruit showing black fruits primarily. You also get some minerality and pepperiness to the wine. It has medium acidity and fine tannins; the tannins firming up on the finish.
I also recently reviewed 2 white wines and a rosé from Rust Wine Co. These 3 wines would also be nice for mom.
Also, very important, let your mom know at least a day in advance that prepared dishes (plus wine?) will be arriving on her doorstep, so that she, or her partner, does not start taking food out of the freezer to cook the next day.
