I enjoy having dinner with friends and introducing an unfamiliar wine. For my latest dinner, I brought a bottle of Kamloops’ area wine, Monte Creek Ranch Frontenac Gris 2024. This is an organic wine using a hybrid grape, Frontenac Gris, that is cold hardy to survive winter blasts, while regular vitis vinifera grape vines would perish.
I picked this wine after hearing what dish was going to be served for dinner: miso glazed sablefish. Together with cooked quinoa mixed with sauteed mushrooms and parmesan cheese. I added my garden-grown shishito peppers which I grilled for them.
Here are my tasting notes for this wine followed by the food and wine pairing.
Monte Creek Ranch Frontenac Gris 2024 (BC $24.99) – It has a clear, deeper golden colour in the glass. Light, sweet aromas of stone fruits and honey. This wine is off-dry, medium-plus body with a round, thicker mouthfeel. Medium acidity leaving a light acidic prickle on your tongue. Pears, dried stone fruits, and honey on the palate. A medium-plus to long length, finishing with mouthwatering acidity and the same flavours, plus some honeyed peaches. A delicious wine.

Dinner

The miso-glazed sablefish was roasted perfectly. The meat was tender and flaky and the oiliness of this fish made the dish taste even more decadent. The honey and dried stone fruit flavours along with the acidity and thicker mouthfeel of the wine matched equally to the strength of the dish. The flavours were very complementary. The quinoa added texture and savouriness and the grilled shishito peppers added a different smoky component. This dish and wine are a perfect pairing. Highly recommended.
