My Last Two Malbecs To Please You For Malbec World Day, April 17, 2025PR SAMPLE

Malbec World Day logoHere are my final two Argentinean Malbec wines that I would like to present to you in preparation for Malbec World Day, April 17, 2025.  The first wine is Doña Paula Estate High Altitude Malbec 2023 and the second wine is Luigi Bosca Wines’ Malbec 2022.

You may remember that I wrote about the Luigi Bosca Wines’ La Linda Old Vines Malbec 2021 in an earlier article

Luigi Bosca Malbec comes from younger vineyards. The vines are typically around 10–20 years old, which means they are still developing and producing fruit with a fresh and more vibrant character. La Linda Old Vines Malbec comes from older vines, typically over 50 years old. These older vines are more established, and their yields are generally lower but of higher quality. The older vines tend to produce more concentrated and complex flavours in the wine due to their deep root systems and low yields. I invite you to compare my tasting notes between these two wines from the two articles.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Doña Paula Estate High Altitude Malbec 2023 (BC $19.99. On sale at BCL $14.99 til April 26/25)

Appearance: This wine has a deep, almost opaque, ruby-black colour in the glass.  Teardrops on the sides of the glass after swirling.
Nose: Medium intensity aromas of plums, black fruit, smokiness, black pepper, and oak. The wine has lighter aromas and less smokiness after decanting.  You can add berry fruit aromas.
Palate: This wine is dryish with a soft, smooth, light mouthfeel.  The wine does get fuller bodied after swirling.  Medium-minus intensity tannins and medium acidity.  Black fruits, plums, and touches of oak, char, and smokiness on the palate. After decanting, the wine bumps up to medium body, with a thicker rounder mouthfeel.  Add juicy berry fruit flavour and less smokiness.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing off-dry (fruity?) with black fruit flavours, a touch of pepperiness, and light tannins. Add berry fruit flavours to the finish after decanting.

The wine is a little different after decanting.  Berry fruit aromas and flavours are present, and the wine has a thicker, rounder mouthfeel.  Decanting may be a little better, but not really needed.

Rating: 4 stars4.5 stars The Doña Paula Estate High Altitude Malbec 2023 shows off a deep ruby-black hue with teardrops on the glass, offering inviting aromas of plums, black fruit, smoke, and pepper, which lighten and gain berry notes with decanting. On the palate, it’s smooth and soft with black fruits, oak, and a touch of char, becoming fuller and rounder with juicy berry flavours after aeration. The finish is medium-plus, off-dry with dark fruit and gentle pepperiness, enhanced by added berry notes post-decanting.

Luigi Bosca Wines’ Malbec 2022 (BC $26.99. On sale at BCL $24.99 til April 26/25)

Appearance: Just like the Doña Paula, this wine has a deep, almost opaque, ruby-black colour in the glass.  Teardrops on the sides of the glass after swirling.
Nose: Light aromas of black fruit and toast.  Slight char and cinnamon scents after swirling. No change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate: Dry, fuller body with a smooth, thicker mouthfeel.  Ripe, sweet dark fruit flavours, black plums and touches of floral, char, and oak.  Medium acidity and tannins. You can add berry fruits and a touch of sweet cherry flavours to the palate after decanting.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with ripe sweet dark fruits, char and pepperiness.  Thicker mouthfeel to the finish.  The tannins are a little drying on the finish. After decanting the tannins get a little stronger, there is some bitterness and cherry flavours on the finish.  There is also less pepperiness and char.

No need to decant this wine.  Just open and enjoy.

Rating: 4 stars4.5 stars The Luigi Bosca Wines’ Malbec 2022 offers a deep ruby-black hue and inviting aromas of black fruit, toast, and a hint of char and cinnamon. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and smooth, with ripe dark fruit, black plums, and notes of floral, oak, and char, gaining sweet cherry and berry nuances after decanting. The finish is medium-plus with a plush texture and drying tannins, though decanting brings more firmness and a touch of bitterness while softening the spice and char.
