Two More Malbec Wines to Celebrate Malbec World Day, April 17, 2025PR SAMPLE

Argentina flagI have two more Malbec wines from Argentina to tell you about in preparation for Malbec World Day on April 17, 2025. These two wines are both 2021 vintage, although one is listed as Reserva, it may have some additional claims to older vines or longer aging, while the other is noted as a single vineyard wine. The two wines I am reviewing are the Terrazas de los Andes Reserva Malbec 2021 (multiple vineyards) and the Decero Remolinos Vineyard Malbec 2021.  Let me tell you about these wines.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Terrazas de los Andes Reserva Malbec 2021 (BC $29.98 at Everything Wine)

Appearance: A deep, clear, garnet colour.
Nose: Medium intensity aromas that surprised me, showing mostly pine needles with light plums and berry fruit behind. There was no change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate: This wine is dry, lighter bod, smooth and softly round. Light acidity and tannins. Pine needle flavours show up on the palate plus lighter amounts of ripe black fruits, red cherries, and then juicy berries with air. The wine moves up to medium body and has a thicker mouthfeel after decanting.  Juicy berry fruits pine needles and plums now features on the palate with very little black fruit flavours.
Finish: Medium-plus length finishing with flavours of pine needles, red and candied cherries, and berry fruits. Light pepperiness. The tannins get stronger on the finish. No change to the finish after decanting.

An elegant wine with interesting pine needle aromas and flavours.  No need to decant, but if you do the wine is fuller bodied, has more berry fruit and less black fruit flavours.

This may be the first time that I tasted pine needles in an Argentinean Malbec.  Is it in the grape? Yes and no.  It is not a typical flavour of the Malbec grape.  But there are likely conifers near to the vineyard(s) and with breezes blowing, the scent (oils) from the conifers can drift into the vineyard and stick to the skins of the grapes.  This similarly happens in Australian with eucalyptus scent showing up in Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and McLaren Vale Syrah.

Rating: ****o The Terrazas de los Andes Reserva Malbec 2021 features a deep garnet colour with medium-intensity aromas of pine needles, light plums, and berry fruit. On the palate, it is dry with a smooth, round mouthfeel, showing pine needle flavours along with red cherries and juicy berries, which become more prominent after decanting. The finish is medium-plus in length, with lingering pine needle, red cherry, and berry notes, and a touch of pepperiness, while the tannins grow stronger with air.

Decero Remolinos Vineyard Malbec 2021 (BC $29.98 at Everything Wine)

Appearance: This wine has a deeper, almost opaque ruby colour.
Nose: Medium intensity, deep aromas, of juicy black berries, black plums, nutmeg and black pepper, plus touches of cedary oak and vanilla. No change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate: Dry, lighter body with a smooth, round mouthfeel. Very soft, silky tannins. Juicy black berries, black cherries and plums plus a hint of floral on the palate. The wine has a touch of buttery texture with air and gets fuller bodied with air. The wine bumps up to medium body and juicy berry flavours become more prominent after decanting.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with flavours of ripe black berries, some sweet berry fruit and light pepperiness. Medium-intensity fine-grained tannins on the finish. No change to the finish after decanting.

A wine with delicious aromas and flavours and a silky mouthfeel.  No need to decant, unless you want the wine to have a little bigger mouthfeel.
