Gérard Bertrand‘s Le Chouchou 2023 is the winery’s answer to new consumer trends, producing a light, fresh red wine. It has low alcohol content and can be enjoyed at a cooler temperature. It sits somewhere between a rosé and a fuller-bodied red wine, IMHO. This wine is a blend of organic Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault grapes coming from Cevennes, Limoux, in south-central France. I received this wine to sample and tell you about. Maybe it will be your glou-glou wine of the summer?
BTW, “Le Chou Chou” is a French phrase that translates to “The Cabbage” in English. However, it’s also a term of endearment, similar to “sweetheart” or “darling”. This phrase is often used in informal settings, such as with friends or family members.
My Wine Tasting Notes
Gérard Bertrand Le Chouchou 2023 (BC $25.99 on sale. $27.99 regular)
Appearance: This wine has a lighter, transparent to the core ruby colour in the glass.
Nose: It has light aromas of red fruit, rhubarb, red cherries and some toastiness. The wine has stronger, sweeter aromas after decanting; lots of rhubarb.

Mostly red fruit flavours, with lesser amounts of rhubarb, floral, candied cherries, red plums, nutmeg and some pepperiness. A lighter mouthfeel after decanting, but the same flavours.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with a light acidic prickle and light drying tannins. Red fruit flavours, with touches of nutmeg and pepperiness. No change to the finish after decanting.
A lighter bodied, dry, fresh red fruited wine. No need to decant.
