Understanding and identifying faults in wine is crucial for both novice and seasoned enthusiasts. Wine faults can significantly diminish the overall enjoyment of a bottle, affecting its aroma, taste, and texture. Common faults include cork taint, oxidation, and microbial contamination, each imparting undesirable characteristics to the wine. Recognizing these faults, and others is essential for developing a discerning palate and ensuring a positive drinking experience. If you encounter a tainted bottle at home or in a restaurant, it’s essential to address the issue promptly. When dining out, inform the server about the concern.  Some restaurants will offer you a new bottle of the same wine, or you can choose a different wine. At home, contact the retailer or winery where you purchased the bottle to discuss a potential replacement or refund. Being aware of wine faults empowers you to make informed choices, contributing to a more enjoyable and fulfilling wine-drinking experience. Take this fun 5-question quiz to see how familiar you are with wine faults.
