Pinot Noir is probably my favourite red wine when its made well. The roots of this exquisite red grape variety can be traced back to the vineyards of ancient Côte d’Or in Burgundy, where its cultivation flourished under the region’s unique terroir. Throughout the ages, Burgundian winemakers have meticulously honed their craft, producing wines of unparalleled elegance, complexity, and finesse.
Pinot Noir has been celebrated and praised by numerous famous individuals throughout history, including kings and notable figures. King Louis XIV of France, known as the “Sun King,” reportedly had a fondness for Pinot Noir from Burgundy and was said to have called it “the wine of kings.” Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States and an avid wine connoisseur, also expressed admiration for Burgundian Pinot Noir, describing it as “the most delightful of wines” during his travels in France.
Besides Burgundy, other cooler climate regions, like British Columbia, also make pretty Pinot Noir wines. Here is a fun 5-question quiz to see how well you know Pinot Noir.
