Santa Ana La Mascota Vineyards and Trapiche Broquel Malbecs for Malbec World Day

I have two more Argentinean Malbecs to tell you about in preparation for Malbec World Day on April 17.  The first wine is Bodegas Santa Ana La Mascota Vineyards Malbec 2020 and the second is Trapiche Broquel Selected Barrels Malbec 2020.  Both are from the same vintage.  Do they show similar characteristics?  I noticed that their Diam corks have the same design.  Let’s see.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Bodegas Santa Ana La Mascota Vineyards Malbec 2020 (BC $21.98)

Appearance: A dull almost opaque ruby colour.  About 96% opaque.
Nose: Medium-minus intensity with red berries, some meatiness, that burns off, and a hint of sweet spices on the nose. There was more of a black fruit and less red fruit aroma after decanting.
Palate: The wine is dryish, medium body, smooth and round with a buttery mouthfeel.   Lower acidity and medium-minus fine-grained tannins.  Red fruits, berries, plums, and touches of blackberries, floral and oak flavours. The wine felt dried and had more black fruit on the palate, plus some dark chocolate flavour toward the finish.
Finish: Medium length finishing with flavours of blackberries, sweet red berries, and light pepperiness and oak.  Medium intensity firm tannins. Not much difference on the finish after decanting.

Decanting or not is ok.  If you prefer more black fruit flavours, then decant.

Rating: 4 stars A deeply coloured Malbec with medium-minus intensity red or black fruit aromas and flavours, depending on decanting.  Quite smooth and round on the palate.  Medium-length.

Appearance: Almost opaque dull ruby colour.  About 98% opaque.

Palate: Dry, medium-minus body, round and smooth, almost mouth-filling.  Light acidity and fine-grained light tannins.  Juicy berries, red fruit and plums. plus touches of black pepper and red cherries.  The wine tasted a bit sweeter after decanting, the tannins a bit stronger and there was now a touch of floral on the palate.
Finish: Medium length finishing with black cherries, sweet berries, light oak and tannins. More evident black fruit on the finish with decanting and some pepperiness.

An understated wine with a smooth seamless merging of fruit, acidity and tannins. Decant if you prefer a more black fruit profile.
