Quick Review: Gold Hill Winery Cabernet Franc 2017

If you like, big, bold red wines, you should consider BC’s Gold Hill Winery’s wines.  I tasted their Cabernet Franc 2017 and it is top quality.  The winery noted that 2017 was a hot year providing a richer, bigger, bolder expression of their usual Cabernet Franc.  Let me tell you about it.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep, about 80% opaque garnet in colour.
Nose: Medium-intensity aromas of black cherries, blackberries, plums, sweet spices, cedar and oak. There was a smoky aroma with decanting along with cinnamon spice to add to the already mentioned aromas.
Palate: Dry, medium body, round and soft mouthfeel. Medium-intensity fine-grained tannins with chalkiness. Medium acidity. Deep flavours of black plum, black cherry, blackberry, and red fruit, with touches of vanilla, tarriness, leather, stewed fruit, and oak. The wine bumped up to medium-plus body and had a thicker mouthfeel after decanting.  There were also more black fruit flavours and now sweet spices.  Deep flavours.
Finish: Medium plus length finishing with light pepperiness and oak. Juicy black fruit flavours and chalky drying tannins.  Less drying tannins and more dark sweet fruit flavours after decanting.

I give the decanted version of this wine a slight edge as the wine is bigger and rounder with more fruit flavour.  But either way, this is a quality wine to enjoy.  I appreciate that the winery uses a nice solid cork.  For food pairings, the winery suggests, “Gold Hill Cabernet Franc is ideal to pair with food: grilled duck, game, beef or lamb, eggplant, roast tomatoes or roast vegetables, and creamy soft cheeses which pair well with the soft tannins.

Rating: 4.5 stars5 stars  Deep garnet colour.  Medium-intensity aromas of black cherries, blackberries, plums, sweet spices, cedar and oak.
