OMFG, Blasted Church Vineyards has made an excellent sparkling wine. It really is called OMFG and it is vintage MMXV (which is 2015) from a mix of 59% Pinot Noir and 41% Chardonnay grapes from the Skaha Bench made in the Traditional Method. The wine was disgorged on January 26, 2022.

According to the winery, to make this sparkling wine, “…both vineyard blocks were hand harvested, whole cluster pressed, and fermented separately. Pinot Noir contributed a depth of colour, richness, and a pronounced red fruit character, while the
Chardonnay contributed a vibrant acidity, citrus aromas, and helped with the overall balance and ageability of the wine. <Karl: I did not pick up on red fruit character, but the richness of the wine is quite evident.> After several blending trials and tastings, the final composition of the base wine was assembled and put to bottle for secondary fermentation… In the case of the 2015 OMFG, it was on lees for six years before being hand riddled and disgorged.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Blasted Church Vineyards OMFG MMXV ($ 40)

It made quite a thick layer of mousse when I poured the wine into my glass.  In the picture, that is about half the height before I was able to snap an image.

Appearance: A bright, clear, medium-intensity lemon with a hint of straw mixed in.
Nose: Medium-plus intensity sweet aromas of stone fruits, apple, and a touch of brioche.
Palate: Slightly off-dry, round, and very mouth-filling with medium-sized creamy bubbles.  The bubbles are quite delightful, dancing lightly on your tongue.  There is some acidic prickle after the bubbles subside. Stone fruit, citrus, and crisp apple plus a touch of floral on the palate.  With some time open you get pears and toast on the palate as well.
Finish: Medium length finishing with citrus and stone fruits plus some grape stem bitterness.

Rating: Bright lemon with a straw tinge colour.  Medium-plus intensity sweet aromas of stone fruits, apple and a hint of brioche.  Slightly off-dry with mouth-filling creamy medium-sized bubbles.  Bright acidity.  Stone fruit, citrus and crisp apple plus a touch of floral on the palate.  Medium length finishing with citrus and stone fruits and some grape stem bitterness.

Where Can I Buy This Wine?

With this limited production wine of 500 bottles, you need to go to the winery and purchase it at their shop.  I have been told that the wine is nearly sold out.  Carpe diem.
