Local Food Producers Threatened by COVID-19 Crisis

We all need food to live.  BC’s small food producers produce top-quality meats, fruits, and vegetables for us.  You can find their food in grocery stores, but as well as at Farmer’s Markets, directly at their farm and now you can have it shipped to you.  Let’s help our local food producers survive this crisis we have with COVID-19 by purchasing their products and they will help you survive with their local products.  Here is a press release I received today about our local food producers and shipping food to you.

Closure of farmers’ markets, changing buying habits, reduced visits at independent grocery stores, consumer focus on mass-volume brands, cashflow challenges, cancelled food events and more threaten the survival of many small BC food producers.

The pandemic is disrupting our food system and putting small BC food producers at risk.  What has changed since the onset of the Covid19 crisis and the introduction of social distancing measures?   Traditional avenues for people to buy local specialty food products are being impeded:

  • Farmers markets have closed
  • Food events have been suspended
  • Consumers are being told to shop online and make fewer grocery store visits
  • Visits to smaller independent grocery stores are dropping
  • Concerns around provisioning means that people are stocking up on mass-produced foods

To address this situation, we’re launching a new initiative. The Emergency Pantry Food Box allows BC residents to support our local food producers and get delicious artisan foods delivered at wholesale pricing.

BC’s small food producers are struggling to stay afloat, and we need to keep this important supply of Canadian & BC-based food products alive. We can ship an Emergency Pantry Food Box right to your door.
