Hahn Family Wines Pinot Noir 2014 – A Tale of 2 Wines

Hahn Monterey County Pinot Noir 2014

We all need air to breathe, don’t you agree? Even wines can benefit from breathing.  I was reminded this twice over the last few days.  One was at a restaurant, where I ordered a bottle of red wine that I’ve tasted before and rated it very highly. When I tried it in the restaurant, I thought it may be corked as the nose and palate were so suppressed.  Only after a bit of cooling the wine to the appropriate temperature, plus air and time to decant (1.5 hours), did the wine truly open and reward me and my dinner mates.

My second encounter with needing a wine to breathe comes with a bottle of Hahn Family Wines Monterey Coast Pinot Noir 2014, which I received for review.  I’ve tried Hahn Family Wines Pinot Noir 2013 before, enjoyed it tremendously and written about it on mywinepal.  The wines were opened and decanted before being served.

When I taste wines, making detailed notes from home, I taste the wine 2-3 times.  The first time is upon opening the wine, which is when most people will drink their glass of wine.  For those who wait and decant their wine, I taste the wine a second time the next day, to see if/how the wine may have changed in aroma or flavour.  I had a wonderful surprise when I tasted the Hahn Family Wines Monterey County Pinot Noir 2014 these two times.  Let me give you the separate tasting notes for the same wine.

My 2 Hahn Family Wines Reviews

Hahn Monterey County Pinot Noir 2014

Hahn Family Wines Monterey County Pinot Noir 2014 (first tasting) – Medium plus garnet with a ruby tinge in colour.  Youthful nose with lees, dried herbs, cassis, nutmeg, black fruit and red cherries aromas.  A very intense nose.  With a little air, you get more black fruit aromas.  Dry, very silky, velvety mouth feel.  Lower tannins that pick up on the finish.  There is a nice mineral component that flows through this wine.  Flavours of black fruit, red cherry, ripe raspberries, with hints of smoke and oak.  There is some tarriness and/or dark chocolate toward the finish.  On the finish you get dark fruit, pepper and some meatiness.
Rating:  An intense, brooding wine with dark fruit aromas and flavours, but velvety smooth on the palate.

Hahn Family Wines Monterey County Pinot Noir 2014 (second tasting) – Medium plus garnet with a ruby tinge in colour.  Youthful nose with prominent smoky strawberries, red cherries, and hints of violets, sweet spice, oak and lees.  Dry, very silky, velvety mouth feel.  Lower tannins that pick up on the finish.  There is a nice mineral component that flows through this wine. Quite floral on the palate along with flavours of black fruit, red cherry, ripe raspberries, with hints of smoke and oak.  There is some tarriness and/or dark chocolate toward the finish.  On the finish you get dark fruit with light pepper.
Rating: A wonderful wine that has smoky strawberries and violets on the nose, and red fruits and flowers on the palate.  The silkiness of the wine paired very nicely with the red fruit flavours.

Which wine do you prefer?  I think both are great, and knowing that letting this wine decant and getting a different view of the wine is fascinating.

The 2013 vintage of this wine is listed in the BC Liquor stores, for a price of $21.99, which is a bargain for what you are getting in the bottle.  I am not sure if the 2014 vintage is on the shelves yet as there may be a delay updating the BC Liquor Stores website.  Stock up and enjoy when you find it.
