Your Dinner Companions: Domaine Artema Winery Village Sparkling Rose and La Petite MortPR SAMPLE

I saved my last two wines from Domaine Artema Winery to be their Village Sparkling Rosé 2024 and their La Petite Mort (port style), NV, dessert wine.  These two wines can cover the start and end of a delicious dinner.  I did not decant either wine.  In the first case, you don’t want the delicious bubbles in your sparkling wine to dissipate and the latter, dessert wines, with their high sugar content, tend to stay unchanged in aromas and flavours over a long time.  Let me tell you about these two wines.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Domaine Artema Winery Village Sparkling Rosé 2024 (BC $34.90)

A blend of 74% Pinot Noir and 26% Chardonnay grapes.  Winemaker’s notes, “…used slightly crushed grapes to allow for some colour transfer…then fermented together in stainless steel tanks.  Upon completion the wine was racked off lees and kept in stainless tank till bottling.”

Appearance:  a medium-minus intensity rose petal colour in the glass.
Nose:  Medium aromas of strawberries.
Palate:  Dry, medium-plus body.  Medium-plus acidity and biting bubbles that fill your mouth.  Strawberries primarily on the palate along with some grape stem and minerality.
Finish:  A medium-plus length, finishing dry with strawberries and grape stem flavours.

Rating: ****o****.*  Domaine Artema Winery Village Sparkling Rosé 2024 presents a delicate rose petal colour with inviting strawberry aromas. The palate is dry and vibrant, showing lively bubbles, medium-plus acidity, and flavours of fresh strawberries with hints of grape stem and minerality. It finishes dry and crisp with lingering strawberry and grape stem notes.

Domaine Artema Winery La Petite Mort, NV (BC $27.90)

Crafted with 47% Zinfandel, 40% Merlot, and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.  Aged 4 years in French oak barrels.

Nose:  Pronounced aromas of cedar, dark chocolate and black fruits.
Palate:  Medium plus body with a lean mouthfeel.  Medium sweetness with pronounced flavours of cedar, black fruits, black cherries, and chocolate.  Peppery on the palate.
Finish:  Medium-plus to long length finishing quite peppery, with flavours of black fruit, dark chocolate, black cherries, and cedar.

Rating: ****.*  Domaine Artema Winery La Petite Mort, NV shows a clear garnet hue and expressive aromas of cedar, dark chocolate, and ripe black fruits. The palate is medium-plus bodied with a lean texture, offering flavours of black cherries, chocolate, and cedar along with some pepperiness. This dessert wine has medium sweetness.  It finishes long and structured, with lingering notes of dark fruit, cherries, chocolate, and a peppery lift.

I don’t know why this dessert wine is called “the little death”, but likely to do with French sense of humour.  If you know, please leave a comment below.
