Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Italy, Chianti Classico wines boast a rich history. This renowned wine, characterized by its distinct aroma, flavour profile, and a centuries-old winemaking tradition, has become a symbol of Italian viticulture.  The history of Chianti Classico can be traced back to the Middle Ages when the first vineyards were planted in the Chianti region. However, it was in the 18th century that the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de’ Medici, officially delimited the Chianti production zone. This marked the birth of Chianti as a recognized wine-producing area. The original Chianti Classico recipe was created in 1872 by Barone Ricasoli. A descendant of the Ricasoli family will be at VanWineFest 2024!

Chianti Classico wines have a classification pyramid starting with Chianti Classico at the introductory level and most widespread moving up to Chianti Classico Riserva and then at the top of the pyramid Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Chianti Classico wines are typically aged for a minimum of 12 months, offering a youthful and vibrant expression of Sangiovese, the predominant grape variety in Chianti Classico. Chianti Classico Riserva wines undergo longer aging, often exceeding 24 months. This extended maturation imparts greater complexity and depth to the wine.  Chianti Classico Gran Selezione was introduced in 2014. It represents the pinnacle of Chianti Classico wines. To earn this classification, the wine must be produced from estate-grown grapes, aged for a minimum of 30 months, and showcase exceptional quality.

Aromas and Flavours

Chianti Classico wines are primarily made from Sangiovese grapes. When you open a bottle of Chianti Classico, in general, you can say that the wine will be fresh and fragrant with primarily red fruit aromas, although you can also get cherries, plums and other dark fruits. There can also be a floral tone, such as violets on the nose and palate. The wine is usually lighter coloured, but some do get a quite dark garnet. Any spiciness would come from oak barrel aging. Tannins are usually not overly strong, meaning that you get a wine that has a nice balance between fruit, tannins, and acidity.

Food Pairings

Chianti Classico’s versatility makes it an excellent companion for a wide range of dishes. Its bright acidity and medium to full body make it a perfect match for traditional Italian cuisine. Consider pairing it with classic dishes like:

  • Pasta Bolognese: The acidity of Chianti Classico cuts through the richness of the meat sauce, creating a harmonious balance.
  • Grilled Steak Florentine: The wine’s bold flavours complement the savoury char of a perfectly grilled steak.
  • Aged Pecorino Cheese: The tannins in Chianti Classico pair well with the robust flavours of aged Pecorino, creating a delightful contrast.
