“According to the Greek poet Homer, Venus was the daughter of Jupiter and the ocean nymph Dione. The goddess was born emerging from the sea on a large shell. Botticelli depicted The Birth of Venus as one of the most iconic works of art of the Renaissance. Completed in 1485, the painting was commissioned by the court of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Botticelli’s Venus continues to be a global icon of elegance and sensuality.” (https://www.ruffino.it/)
I think the Ruffino Aqua di Venus wines, two white and one rose wine, are meant to show off elegance and sensuality. The winery launched Aqua di Venus in 2020, with great success in Italy and now one of the wines is available here in BC. I have a bottle of Ruffino Aqua di Venus Pinot Grigio D.O.C. 2022 from the Friuli region of Italy (northeast corner of Italy) to present to you. With the Pacific Ocean nearby us and Botticelli’s Venus on a large shell, this wine should be suited for our BC seafood. Let me tell you about this wine.
My Wine Tasting Notes
Ruffino Aqua di Venus Pinot Grigio D.O.C. 2022 (BC $26.99)
Appearance: A medium-intensity clear bright lemon-straw colour.
Nose: Medium-plus intensity aromas of lemon, lime, honey, apricot and a touch of herbaceousness. I did not notice a difference after decanting.
Palate: Dry, lighter-bodied, round with a thicker texture. It leaves a light acidic prickle on your tongue. Fresh bright citrus flavours, with lesser amounts of green fruits, apricots and peaches in the background. Mineral toward the finish. The wine had the same fruit flavours after decanting but had a softer, lighter body, and less acidic prickle.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with lingering citrus flavour, a touch of apricot and a mix of stony minerality and steeliness. A touch of pepperiness at the very end. No change to the finish after decanting.
Rating: – A wine you can enjoy as soon as it is opened. Citrus with a touch of stone fruits on the nose and palate. Lighter-bodied with a soft round mouthfeel. Minerality toward the finish. Medium-plus length.
I did try this wine with a filet of fresh sockeye salmon I purchased. I pan-fried the salmon with lemon pepper seasoning and then lemon juice to finish it off. The same, moist, went nicely with the fruitness of the wine, plus the acidity worked well, even though it was not as high as a Sauvignon Blanc.
