I have two aromatic white wines from St. Hubertus Family Estate Winery and their associated Oak Bay Vineyard, which I can see going very well with an assorted cheese plate over the holidays. The first wine is the St. Hubertus Family Estate Winery Riesling 2019 and the other wine is the Oak Bay Vineyard Gebert Family Reserve Gewurztraminer 2019.
The St Hubertus & Oak Bay Vineyards were originally planted in 1928 By J.W. Hughes during a time when agricultural land was plentiful. Since 1984 the Gebert Families use sustainable & organic farming practices on their 80-acre vineyard to produce 100% Estate Grown wines.
My Wine Tasting Notes
St. Hubertus Family Estate Winery Riesling 2019 (BC $18)
On the label for this wine it lists the vineyard as sustainable, not yet organic, and that this wine is “Salmon Safe” certified.
Appearance: A deeper gold colour.
Nose: Medium-intensity aromas of dried stone fruits and honey. No change with decanting.
Palate: Dry, medium-plus body, with a round, thicker mouthfeel. Pronounced flavours of dried stone fruits, apricots in particular, dried apple, a touch of citrus rind. No change with decanting.
Finish: Medium length with dried apricots and citrus rind, plus honey and/or a touch of marmalade. No change with decanting.
This wine has persistence in aroma and flavour. Enjoy at your leisure.
Rating: A deep, clear, gold colour. Mature aromas of dried stone fruits and a touch of honey. Dry, round with a thick texture. Medium-plus acidity leaves a light prickle on your tongue. Aromas of dried stone fruits, apricots in particular, plus dried apple, and a touch of citrus rind. Medium length, finishing with dried apricots, citrus rind and a touch of honey.
Oak Bay Vineyard Gebert Family Reserve Gewurztraminer 2019 (BC $18)
This wine is also “Salmon Safe” certified.
Appearance: Medium-intensity lemon with a green tinge in the glass.
Nose: Light, lifted aromas of citrus, lychee, rose, and spearmint. Pine needle scent with swirling. Same aromas, sans pine needles after decanting.
Palate: Dry, medium-plus body with a thicker mouthfeel. Light acidic prickle. Roses, lychee, and a touch of apricot on the palate. Light pepperiness. Maybe slightly lighter in body with decanting. Add apple blossoms to go along with the roses, lychee, apricot, and pepper.
Finish: Medium length finishing with citrus, floral, peach, some pepperiness, and light pepperiness. More of apricot fruit on the finish than peach with decanting.
No major difference with decanting so enjoy this wine without hurry.
Rating: Medium clear lemon with green tint. Light aromas of citrus, lychee, floral and spearmint. Dry, medium-plus body with light acidic prickle. Floral and lychee on the palate, along with a touch of apricot and pepperiness. Medium length.
Where Can I Buy These Wines?
Both wines are sub $20. Reasonably priced.
The Riesling is available as part of a BC Wine Holiday special package offered by St. Hubertus in October and November. Here is the link to this offer. I do not get any financial compensation for this wine package. I am just trying to spread the word about our BC wines.
The winery website links to each individual wine for purchase:
