A Little Charisma from Two Red Wines by Gold Hill Winery

Here are two more Charisma wines from Gold Hill Winery.  The Charisma line of wines are meant to be charming approachable everyday drinking wines.  So something on the patio or at a casual lunch or dinner.  I tasted their Charisma Cabernet Merlot 2021 and their Charisma Malbec 2020.

Gold Hill Winery is located in Oliver, BC.  Last year, 2021, as you may remember there were forest fires in the area in the Fall.  A touch of the smokiness from those fires is imparted in the Cabernet Merlot wine but makes it more of a “condiment” adding additional aroma and flavour to the wine.  I can imagine enjoying this wine with grilled sausages.  Let me tell you about both wines.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Gold Hill Winery Charisma Cabernet Merlot 2021 (BC $24.99)

Appearance: A deep, about 80% opaque, yet clear to the core garnet colour.
Nose: Medium intensity aromas full of smoky sausage, plus red fruit and light violets. With decanting you can add some toastiness to the aromas and drop the violets.
Palate: A little off-dry, with a leaner mouthfeel. A real mix of flavours with red and black fruit, raspberries and plums, plus leather and light floral. With air, you get some toastiness, cocoa and capsicum, plus a touch of iodine on the finish.  The wine becomes a bit rounder with decanting, with persistent fruit flavours.  The cocoa and iodine touches disappear and are replaced by coffee tones.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing off-dry with flavours of red fruit, leather, smokiness, light pepperiness, and plums at the very end. A touch of iodine and black fruit with air. The only change with decanting on the finish is the lack of iodine.

I think that giving this wine some time to decant lets the flavours of the wine mesh more together, so I recommend decanting.

Rating: 3.5 stars4 stars Deeper clear to the core garnet colour.  Medium intensity nose showing smoky sausage, red fruits, and a touch of violets (if not decanted).  Off-dry, medium-plus body, semi-round mouthfeel.  Red and black fruits, plus leather and lightly floral on the palate.  Plus touches of toast, cocoa/coffee, and capsicum. Medium-plus length.

Gold Hill Winery Charisma Malbec 2020 (BC $24.99)

Appearance: A very translucent ruby colour in the glass. About 50% opaque.
Nose: Light aromas of red fruit and mace with black fruit aromas with time in the glass. There is also a brief hint of mint when you first try the wine either upon opening or after decanting.
Palate: Off-dry, medium-body, soft and round with a thicker mouthfeel. Quite floral on the palate, along with mace and a blend of black fruit, blueberries, blackberries, and black currants. Lower acidity and lighter tannins. No change in flavours or texture with decanting.
Finish: Medium-plus length with black fruit, mace spice, light pepperiness and a mix of tartness and medium drying tannins. An off-dry finish. No changes on the finish after decanting.

No need to decant this wine as there are no changes.  Open and enjoy!

Rating: 4 stars A lighter clear ruby colour.  Light aromas of red fruit and mace plus a whiff of mint.  Off-dry, medium-plus body, soft, round and silky mouthfeel.  Quite floral along with a mix of blue and blackberries and black currants.  Medium-plus length finishing with medium drying tannins, black fruit and light pepperiness.
