Have you tried the Charisma line of wines from Gold Hill Winery in Oliver, BC? I commented on how I really liked their distinctive labels with floral design which I think gives the buyer an idea of what to expect from a bottle. I recently tried their Pinot Gris 2021 and Pinot Noir Rose 2021. Let me tell you about them.
My Wine Tasting Notes
Charisma Pinot Gris 2021 (BC $21.99)
Appearance: A lighter clear lemon green colour in the glass.
Nose: Medium-minus intensity aromas of stone fruits, plus some lees which dissipate quickly. The same aromas with decanting, but you can add a touch of citrus.
Palate: Dry, thick, smooth and round with higher acidity. Citrus and stone fruits to start and transitions to more apples and pears toward the finish. Some peach with air. Still nice and smooth; a little less thick. Mostly peaches, pears, and citrus to start, then add apples toward the finish.
Finish: A long length finishing with apples and pears flavours, plus some grape stem or skin tannins and a touch of pepperiness. A lighter mouthfeel on the finish, but same flavours.
A patio sipper to enjoy with light cheeses. No need to decant.
Rating: – A pale lemon-green colour. Lighter aromas of lees and stonefruits. Dry, soft, thick, and round mouthfeel. Citrus and stone fruits primarily but then add apples and pears toward the finish. Longer length with apples, pears, and a touch of pepperiness and tannins.
Charisma Pinot Noir Rose 2021 (BC $21.99)
Appearance: A lighter orange peach skin colour.
Nose: Medium intensity nose with a mix of matchstick and red fruit. Usually, matchstick goes away with decanting. The matchstick was still present after decanting but a bit lighter.
Palate: Dry and round with a thick mouthfeel, and a high level of puckering acidity. Strawberries mainly but other red fruits as well and a touch of tannins. Some minerality toward the finish. I am hoping the acidity will tone down a bit with decanting. Yes, decanting helped bring down the acidity a bit, but the wine is still tart. Less strawberry flavour, but still has red fruits and now some red cherries.
Finish: Medium length finishing with crisp red apple and strawberries, plus puckering acidity and a touch of pepperiness. Less strawberries and less acidity on the finish with decanting.
I think that it is best to give this wine some decanting time to tone down the matchstick aroma and soften the acidity a bit on the palate.
Rating: A lighter orangey peach skin colour. Medium intensity aromas of matchstick and red fruit, dry and thick, with bracing acidity. Strawberries mainly with some red fruit, plus a touch of minerality. Crisp red apple and strawberries and some pepperiness on the finish.
