Did you know that Gérard Bertrand has a Côte des Roses Collection? I only knew of his Rose wine, but there are 4 from that Collection that are coming or already are in BC. Today I am tasting the Grenache-Vermentino-Viognier 2019 and Chardonnay 2020. Both wines come in a very distinctive and beautiful bottle with a rose petal-shaped base. In addition, instead of cork, Gérard Bertrand is using a glass stopper to make a very classy bottle, plus wine inside. Let me tell you about these wines.
My Wine Tasting Notes
Gérard Bertrand Côte des Roses Grenache-Vermentino-Viognier 2019 (BC $24.99)
Appearance: Clear, medium intensity lemon green colour.
Nose: Light nose with aromas of lemon and honey with touches of stone fruit and white flowers. The aromas stay light after decanting, and you can add hints of orange and petrol.
Palate: Slightly off-dry, medium-plus body and flavour intensity. Round with a thicker mouthfeel, and a persistent light prickle on your tongue. Stone fruits, lemon pith and a hint of floral. Steely from the mid-palate to the finish. The acidity lessens slightly after decanting. The flavours and mouthfeel stay the same except that I no longer picked up any floral.
Finish: Medium-plus length finishing with tart fruits, honey, steeliness, stone fruits, some bramble and a touch of orange. Peach and honey at the very end with decanting.

No major changes between decanted and undecanted versions of these wines. The flavours were very meshed together and difficult to pick out anything specific.
Rating: Lemon and honey with touches of stone fruits and white flower aromas. Dryish round with a thicker mouthfeel and persistent light acidic prickle. Stone fruit, lemon pith ahint of floral, honey and bramble leaf.
Gérard Bertrand Côte des Roses Chardonnay 2020 (BC $25.99)
Appearance: Clear, medium-plus intensity lemon colour.
Nose: Medium intensity, delicate aromas of ripe stone fruits and pears. But if you leave the wine in your glass and it warms up you get pineapple and honey aromas. Pineapple and butterscotch predominate after decanting along with a whiff of stone fruits.
Palate: Dry, and round with a thicker soft mouthfeel, and an acidic prickle that is at the start of your sip, disappears mid-palate, then shows up again on the finish. Citrus, crisp apple, pears and some bramble leaf to start, but if you let the wine warm up a bit, it becomes quite smooth and you get butterscotch, pineapple, vanilla, and oak flavours. This wine is very temperature sensitive. Interesting! The wine becomes very smooth with lower acidity after decanting. Toast, pears, pineapple and butterscotch flavours.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with ripe pears and citrus, plus a dollop of oak, butterscotch, and pineapple with air. The butterscotch and pineapple become stronger after decanting, plus you can add some pepperiness as well.

This wine really opens up with air or warming up in your glass. Enjoy this wine at your leisure in one sitting or the next day. I think this wine would pair very well with roast chicken, gravy and potatoes.
Rating: A delicious wine with ripe stone fruits and pear aromas to start, but then as it warms or is decanted, pineapple and butterscotch. Dry, round and soft with a thicker mouthfeel. An acidic prickle in the beginning and on the finish. Citrus, apples, pears and bramble leaf to finish, and pineapple, butterscotch and pepper once decanted.
Where Can I Buy These Wines?
A few Angry Otter Liquor stores in the Lower Mainland have the Chardonnay, along with Everything Wine in Langley, Vessel in Victoria, Sunshine Hills Liquor Store in Delta, and The Gull in North Vancouver.
These bottles are so nice and they have the glass stopper that I think you can use these bottles, once emptied, to make flavoured vinegar or cordials.
