Two Red Wines to Ease You Into the Fall from Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery

My first two red wines to review in September, after having the mywinepal.com website down.  If you didn’t hear, a hacker was able to get into the servers of my ISP and wipe out many of the servers, including the one where mywinepal is hosted.  I’ve spent about a week reconstructing it and the ISP is working on restoring it fully.  The website is now up and running!  My reward for all this hard work is to taste Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery Pinot Noir 2019 and their signature SUMMIT 2018.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery Pinot Noir 2019 (BC $24.99)

Their 2019 Pinot Noir is a single block from their Lazy RiverVineyard in South Cawston (Similkameen Valley).

Appearance: A beautiful, clear, lighter garnet colour.  About 70% transparent, consistent from rim to core.
Nose: A medium-plus nose with a mix of sweet spices, toast, red fruits, smokiness, red cherries and some candied red cherries.  Plus a touch of roses and violets with air. With decanting I get lots of floral, plus more nutmeg and red fruit aromas, plus some tea leaves.
Palate: Dry, soft and round with a light mouthfeel.  Medium acidity and minimal tannins.  I did pick up a very light prickle on my tongue, which was very interesting to me.  Bright fruit flavours covering red cherries and red fruits, plus light floral and oak. You get more bright acidity with decanting, along with some toastiness and smoke, plus red fruit and floral.  That prickle still was there with decanting.
Finish: A medium length with a light, dry finish.  No major tannins.  Red fruits, candied cherries, oak and a touch of floral. You get some pepperiness with decanting, along with more floral and red cherries, and no candied cherries.
I like both decanted and undecanted versions of this wine, but maybe give a slight edge to the undecanted version.  
Rating: no decanting. This is a finesse wine, medium-bodied with red fruits and red cherries, plus sweet spices on the nose and palate.  Medium acidity and minimal tannins.  Bright fruit flavours.

Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery SUMMIT 2018 (BC $59.99)

From the winery, “A blend of our top blocks from estate-grown fruit in the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys – Lost Horn, South Rock, and Lazy River Vineyards. These blocks are cropped at 3 tons an acre or less, handpicked, hand sorted, and patiently aged in our cellar in a concentrated effort to capture these exceptional terroirs. The individual varietal components are aged for 13 months in 100% French Oak (35% new). Then the very best barrels are blended together and allowed to age a further 11 months in neutral French oak concentrating the intense aromas and flavours of cassis, black and red fruits, fresh tobacco, cracked black pepper,  cedar, and distinct minerality.“

I believe this almost-Bordeaux blend is a mix of Merlot 43%, Cabernet Franc 28%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Syrah 7%, and  Malbec 2%.  Can you guess which grape is not part of Bordeaux?

Appearance: Deep, 80% opaque garnet, but still translucent to the core.
Nose: A medium-minus intensity nose with deep aromas of ripe blackberries and black fruits, and a mix of cinnamon and nutmeg. A cedar scent was quite evident with decanting, along with the black fruits, sweet spices, and now some chocolate.
Palate: Dry and smooth with a light mouthfeel, which gets bigger and rounder with some swirling.  Very light, fine-grained tannins plus light acidity.  Cassis, blackberries, black fruit and black plums flavours plus touches of oak and vanilla.  Sweet, ripe fruit flavours. With decanting along with these juicy berry flavours you can also add cedar. Overall a nice balance between fruit, acidity and tannins.
Finish: A medium length finishing with ripe black fruits, red cherries, nutmeg and mace, plus a touch of oak and pepperiness.  Some (medium) drying tannins.
Rating: A deeply garnet coloured wine, with deep aromas of blackberries and black fruit, and sweet spices.  Dry, smooth and lean that gets bigger and rounder with air.  Cassis, blackberries and other black fruit flavours.  Light acidity, oak and vanilla on the palate.

The 2018 SUMMIT is available for purchase from the Mt. Boucherie website, the Swirl Wine Store and at Everything Wine.  The 2019 Pinot Noir is available from the Mt. Boucherie website, the Swirl Wine Store, at Everything Wine – River District store, and at BC Liquor Stores. These wines may be available at other private wine shops, but you need to ask.
If you guessed that the Syrah grape is not Bordeaux, you are correct.  It is from the Rhone Valley.
