Wither Hills Single Vineyard Taylor River Marlborough Pinot Noir 2017 (NZ $25.99)
Here’s the thing. I tasted this wine and immediately wrote ‘Black Doris Plum’ – then it wouldn’t let me go. It’s the perfect season for them and I had to have one. I got in my car and raced to every supermarket and roadside stall (I live in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, where roadside fruit and veg shops are EVERYWHERE) and do you think I could find a Black Doris? No. Despondency soon gave way to creativity and I used every sip of this wine to satisfy the need. The advantage being of course, that I was also given cherry, pomegranate, layers of smoke and spice and shows just what can be achieved by skilled people in an average vintage. Smooth, slippery and soothing.
