Have you been to Granville Island lately? It has been a while for me, but I have enjoyed meals at the Sandbar Seafood Restaurant. The restaurant is offering special 2000-era pricing for November 2020. That should get you out for a visit. Here is their press release.
Granville Island restaurant marks milestone by offering select menu items at their original 2000-era prices throughout the month of November.
The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant
Vancouver, B.C., October 26, 2020 – Granville Island icon The Sandbar Seafood Restaurant will be turning back the calendar this November and celebrating its 20th anniversary by serving a rotating selection of crowd-pleasing appetizers, entrees and desserts from the restaurant’s inaugural menu at their original prices.
The Sandbar first opened on Granville Island in May 2000. Housed in a former industrial space, the venue once served as a paint warehouse and bootlegging outpost for a rum-smuggling operation during Vancouver’s Prohibition era. In the 1960s, the building was transformed into the Creekhouse Restaurant – the first non-industrial business on the island – and later went on to become Mulvaney’s, Vancouver’s first disco. Local entrepreneur Brent Davies took over the lease in 1999 with plans to reimagine the space as a warm and sophisticated seafood restaurant. Prior to opening The Sandbar, Davies hoisted a 24-ft. cod fishing boat (The Kivi) up to the roof of the building and suspended it from the ceiling over the ocean front bar to serve as an eye-catching showpiece for the restaurant.
Now part of the Sequoia Company of Restaurants, The Sandbar has undergone extensive renovations over the years. The multi-storey space now features a slick Oyster Bar on the main floor, a dedicated second-level Sushi and Sashimi Bar, and an elevated rooftop deck that offers both open-air and enclosed seating with stunning panoramic views of False Creek and the impressive Kivi hanging above.
This fall, The Sandbar will mark its milestone 20th anniversary by transporting diners to the year 2000 and rolling back prices on a rotating list of menu classics. From November 1 to 30, guests will have an opportunity to take advantage of original pricing on a variety of delicious small plates, premium West Coast seafood dishes and hand-rolled sushi from Master Sushi Chef Tsutomu Hoshi, who has held his post at The Sandbar since the restaurant first opened.
Highlights on the Y2K-inspired menu include New England style Clam Chowder ($5.95); a signature Salmon Burger (10.95) featuring Lois Lake Steelhead; Linguine Vongole ($14.95) with white wine and fresh manila clams; Cedar Plank Salmon ($17.95) with coconut jasmine rice; and a rich Seafood Hot Pot ($19.95) with fresh fish, shellfish and vegetables in a coconut red curry sauce.
“It is an honour to be commemorating such an important milestone at The Sandbar this year; we are so grateful to all of the diners who have come through our doors and supported us over the last two decades,” says General Manager Eduardo Tolentino. “We invite long-time patrons and new guests to join us at the restaurant throughout the month of November as we show our appreciation and say thank you by offering a selection of our menu favourites at their original debut prices.”
The Sandbar is located at 1535 Johnston Street on the water under the Granville Street Bridge. The restaurant is open from Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday to Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
