Quick Reviews: Church & State’s Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2017 and Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Church & State Wines Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2017 and Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Church & State Wines Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2017 and Sauvignon Blanc 2018

Here are my last two wines to review for you from Church & State Wines.  They grow grapes and produce wines from both their Vancouver Island and their Okanagan vineyard/winery sites.  The two wines I tasted for this article are their Sauvignon Blanc 2018 and Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2017, both coming from the Okanagan.  Their wines, starting in 2017 were made by wine maker, Arnaud Thierry, originally from Bordeaux.  In addition, he studied enology in Champagne, so maybe you will notice a difference in the style of wines produced starting in 2017, and maybe more sparkling wines?  Let me tell you about the last two wines I tasted.

My Tasting Notes

Church & State Wines Sauvignon Blanc 2018 (BC $22.99) – this wine has a lighter bright straw colour.  It has a pretty nose, medium intensity, with lots of citrus, green fruit, lychee, peach, and honey aroma at the end.  With decanting the lychee aroma lessens but you get pink grapefruit and lime.  A great trade-off.  This wine is dry medium plus body with some roundness, but has angular acidity.  Stony minerality.  Flavours of lemon and other citrus, lychee, a touch of peach and green fruit.  Just like the aromas, with decanting, the lychee flavour decreases, and you now get pink grapefruit and lime flavours.  I also think the wine gets rounder with decanting. The peach flavour gets stronger toward the finish.  It has a medium plus length finishing with citrus and lychee flavours. Tasty.  Don’t worry if you can’t finish the bottle in one sitting as it tastes great the next day as well.
Rating: A Sauvignon Blanc with a very pretty, expressive nose of citrus, green fruits, peaches and honey.  It has a medium body, semi-round with an acidic backbone. Tasty lemon, lychee, green fruit and peach flavours upon opening.

Church & State Wines Coyote Bowl Series Chardonnay 2017 (BC $30.99) – a deeper, bright golden colour in the glass.  This wine has a medium plus intensity nose, mainly tropical fruit and butterscotch with a lesser amount of citrus.  No change on the nose with decanting. It is dry with a fuller body and flavour intensity.  Smooth and round on the palate.  Tropical fruit, sweet vanilla oak and butterscotch. Buttery.  Classic oaked Chardonnay aromas and flavours.  With decanting it is softer and less less of an oaked edge.  It has a medium plus length with more butterscotch flavour on the finish.  Some oak and pepperiness as well.  If you like Napa oaked Chardonnay but not the price or intensity of the wine try this wine.
Rating: Classic oaked Chardonnay aromas and flavours.  Lots of tropical fruit and butterscotch on the nose and the palate. It’s round and buttery and has some oak to add some firmness to the wine.
