More Sea Change and Thr3 Monkeys Wines

In previous articles I reviewed two wines each for Sea Change and Thr3 Monkeys, which left me with two lighter bodied red wines by these two wineries from France and Spain respectively.

As I mentioned before, Sea Change’s labels show their concerns.  In this case they are showing the issues with plastics being dumped in the oceans, which can then be ingested by whales or other sea creatures. When you buy a bottle of their wine, Sea Change makes a donation to marine charities.  One of the charities they work with is Ocean Wise, which works here in BC.

Thr3 Monkeys wines are uncomplicated.  Their wines are listed as vegan friendly. They focus on their consumers – beginners to anyone who just wants a simple sip of wine, and their lifestyles – simply by not taking itself too seriously.

My Tasting Notes

Thr3 Monkeys Fresh & Fruity Red Wine and Sea Change Merlot 2018 with wines in glasses
Thr3 Monkeys Fresh & Fruity Red Wine and Sea Change Merlot 2018 with wines in glasses

Sea Change Merlot 2018, France (BC $18.49) – A deeper garnet colour, yet still translucent to the core.  It has a light intensity nose with a mix of red fruits, plums, and raspberries.   No aromatic differences with decanting. This wine is dry with medium minus acidity, light roundness and very light tannins.  You get red fruits along with a touch of capsicum, then some red cherries and a hint of floral and chocolate flavours.  With decanting I did not pick up any capsicum. It has a medium length finishing with a touch of sweetness, tart red fruit, red cherries, some pepperiness and a touch of drying tannins.

Rating: 3.5 stars A lightly structured red wine with a light red fruit nose.  It’s medium bodied and round with lighter acidity and very light tannins.  Red fruits, red cherries and a touch of floral on the palate.

Thr3 Monkeys “Fresh & Fruity Red Wine”, NV, Spain (BC $13.49) – I am not sure if this is a single varietal wine or a blend, but either way I bet Tempranillo went into it.  Tempranillo is the most widely grown red grape in Spain.  This wine is a deeper garnet colour, but still is translucent to the core.  A medium intensity nose with red berries, a sweet note, a bit of a Lambrusco or cider type nose, and light smoky red fruit aromas.  This wine is off-dry with very light acidity, tannins, and body.  The light tannins do not show up until the very end of your sip.  This wine is very soft and needs a bit of tannic structure.  All flavours, of red fruit, candied red fruit, raspberries, red cherries, floral and cinnamon, are of quite a light intensity.  It finishes with sweet red fruits and floral, with just a touch of drying tannins and some pepperiness at the end. No changes on the nose or palate with decanting.

Rating: 3 stars3.5 stars A light bodied, off-dry red wine with red fruits and candied red fruit flavours and a touch of floral.  Very soft.  If you are not a fan of tannins and don’t mind a sweeter red wine this may be an uncomplicated sip for you.
