February 5, 2019 is the Chinese New Year of the Brown Earth Pig.   In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. 2019 is supposed to be a great year to make money, and a good year to invest. According to chinesenewyear.net, “Pigs might not stand out in a crowd. But they are very realistic. Others may be all talk and no action. Pigs are the opposite.  Though not wasteful spenders, they will let themselves enjoy life. They love entertainment and will occasionally treat themselves. They are a bit materialistic, but this is motivation for them to work hard. Being able to hold solid objects in their hands gives them security.  They are energetic and are always enthusiastic, even for boring jobs. If given the chance, they will take positions of power and status.

So work hard, invest and maybe get a little richer this year, and of course, drink more wine.  Below are some pig-themed wines that I found from around the world.  Some are available in BC, while others are not.

BC Wineries

The Hatch Screaming Frenzy 2016 Pinot Noir

Crescent Hill Winery Smugglers Daughter 2017 Dry Gewürztraminer

Pig themed wines are as scarce as flying pigs in BC.  But with a little help from my Facebook friends, I was able to locate two wines.  The names on the labels do not give you any indication of the pig theme, but once you see the label, you will see flying pigs. Click on the pictures to see larger versions.

The Hatch Screaming Frenzy 2016 Pinot Noir. You can purchase this wine through the winery website, and possibly through many retail stores across BC.  There is a web map on their website showing where their wines are located, but not which wines.  There are many private stores in the Vancouver lower mainland.

Crescent Hill Winery Smugglers Daughter 2017 Dry Gewürztraminer comes from Penticton.  I have not tried any wines from Crescent Hill Winery to date and was surprised I did not know about this winery.  There is a flying pig on the label of this wine.  You can purchase this wine through the Crescent Hill Winery website.

The Rest of the World

Pigs appear to be very popular in the southern hemisphere, in particular, Australia, but also in New Zealand.

Squealing Pig Wines is located in New Zealand has quite funny labels and makes what appears to be as fun accessible wines. They work between Marlborough and Central Otago on the South Island. They produce 8 wines covering sparkling, rosé, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir.  Unfortunately, these wines are not available in BC, but may be in other provinces, or across the border.

The Shy Pig Shiraz

The Shy Pig Shiraz

Shy Pig Shiraz is available in BC through Everything Wine stores!  This Shiraz comes from South Eastern Australia.

Wild Pig Wines are made by the Maison Gabriel Meffre with vineyards in Languedoc as well as in the Rhône Valley in southern France. A wide range of still wines are made from Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Pinot Noir.  Unfortunately, these wines are not available in BC but check with other provinces, or across the border.

There is The Black Pig ‘The Prize’ McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017 from Australia, but the winemakers are kept secret. These un-named winemakers also make The Black Pig McLaren Vale Shiraz 2017. The Prize has a black label while this one has a cream coloured label. The winemaker name Steve Grimley showed up, so I dug deeper and found a group of winemakers with a website called Five O’Clock Somewhere.  Neither of these wines are here in BC, but maybe across the border?

Another wine coming out of Australia, that is specifically made for the Chinese New Year of the Pig by Epic Negotiants.  The wine, Big Red Pig Wine, comes in  Magnum, Jeroboam, Salmanazar, Balthazar and Nebuchadnezzar large format bottles.

Finally, if you have a chance to drive down to Oregon, you can purchase wines from Noble Pig. They are in the McMinnville AVA and produce cool climate wines; Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir.

Enjoy Chinese New Year and celebrate it with many pork dishes.  I particularly like Chinese Crispy Pork Belly.
