Welcoming Fowles Wine to the Vancouver International Wine Festival 2015

Fowles WIne is a new winery for me from Australia, but I am curious to try their wines. They make a wine that is blended to match wild game meat. That is quite interesting. They also have 2 Sauvignon Blancs to try, which you normally don’t think of that much from Australia. Curious to try. Read about the winery, from the winery below.

Fowles Wine is a contemporary winery based in the ruggedly beautiful cool-climate wine region of the Strathbogie Ranges, Victoria, Australia.

Named as a ‘Winery to Watch’ by Wine Spectator Magazine, a ‘Five Star’ winery by James Halliday and Victoria’s Best Tourism Winery (three years in a row), Fowles Wine is renowned for making wine to match with food. In fact, what really sets us apart is our Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? wines – the world’s first wines blended specifically to match with wild game meat.

These food wines are inspired by our Chief Executive Matt Fowles’ love of ‘real food’ – wild meat and home grown vegetables from the Strathbogie Ranges. A responsible hunter and avid food and wine man, Matt wanted to craft wine that matched the texture and intensity of wild game (which is quite different from commercially reared meat). While slightly eccentric, the philosophy that underpins Ladies who Shoot their Lunch and Are you Game? is genuine and honest and the wines themselves modern and exciting.

Ladies who Shoot their Lunch wines are crafted to be generously aromatic, yet with a fine structure – to walk the fine line between complementing the qualities of game meat, whilst not overwhelming them.

Are you Game? wines are bright, fresh and often include a dash of an alternative varietal for adventurous food and wine matching.

We also seek to produce wines that reflect our region with our 490metres and Stone Dwellers wines leading the charge.

Our region, the Strathbogie Ranges, are located about 100 kilometres north of Melbourne, Victoria. High altitude and ruggedly beautiful, the ranges are characterised by ancient granite boulders – statues of a turbulent geological history that goes back 360 million years. Today, the nutrient poor granitic soils and cool continental climate are ideal for producing intense wines that are full of character and elegance. At elevations of up to 600m, the Strathbogie Ranges is one of Australia’s highest wine regions.

Our regional wines are made in the vineyard. We select the best fruit and nurture it to bottle, only gently touched by winemaker hands. Our 490metres wines are approachable wines and our Stone Dwellers wines are crafted to showcase the best varietal examples from the Strathbogie Ranges each vintage.

Try our Wines at the Festival

490metres Sauvignon Blanc 2013. Fresh, cool and crisp, this wine is pale in colour with fresh lime hues. Tropical and kiwi fruit aromas play with grassy notes. The palate is clean and fresh with passion fruit notes and great length of flavour.

Stone Dwellers Chardonnay 2013. This Chardonnay is pale straw in colour. Aromas of honeydew and rock melon play with notes of honeyed, toasty oak and spice. Full of peach and melon, the palate is medium to full bodied with a silky mouth feel and delicious yeasty notes.

Are You Game? Sauvignon Blanc 2013. This Sauvignon Blanc is pale straw in colour with a fresh lime hue. On the nose, aromas of passion fruit, kiwi fruit and papaya lead to a supple palate with a medley of fresh tropical fruits and great length of flavour.

Are You Game? Chardonnay 2013. This wine is bright straw in colour. Aromas of peach, papaya and apricot jump from the glass with subtle notes of oak in the wake. The palate is full bodied and fruity with great texture and a delightful creaminess as a result of four months on yeast lees.

Are You Game? Shiraz 2012. This Shiraz is cherry red in colour. Aromas of black pepper, plum and cinnamon meld with notes of nutmeg and subtle oak. On the palate ripe red fruits, integrated oak and a medley of complex spices lead to a velvety long finish.

Are You Game? Cabernet Sauvignon 2010. This Cabernet, with a dash of Merlot, has a deep crimson colour with violet hues. Aromas of blackcurrant and spicy oak play with hints of mint. The palate is full bodied with dark fruits, finely balanced tannins and a great length of flavour.

Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Shiraz 2010. This wine has a deep, ripe mulberry colour, displaying glints of youthful purple at the rim. Intensely floral aromas of pepper and spice play with rich red fruits. The palate is full body and complex with silky tannins and a generous length of flavour.

Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch Chardonnay 2012. This wine is pale straw in colour. Mineral notes acquiesce to intense aromas of melon, peach and subtle vanilla. The palate is complex and full bodied with balanced oak notes, a wonderfully creamy texture and great length of flavour.
