TWB – The Wine Bar opened December 2012 and is yet to reach it’s first birthday.  A very unpretentious place where there are a plethora of wines around the by the glass, which you can sip  with tiny bites and tapas. But did you know that Rachelle Goudreau, Sommelier at TWB, is offering something extra every other Thursday; a bit of educated wine and food pairing to help you enjoy wine more, and to get introduced to the fine food from Provence Marinaside, the older sister to TWB. Every session will have different food and wine pairings, so come as often as you like.

I attended along with Dianne Chow as guests of TWB & PR lady Nancy Wong, to find out about their “Perfect Pairings” events.  I like it because it goes for half an hour, although you may be having so much fun you may stay longer.  It starts at 6pm and you are given 3 wines to taste.  Three wines is just the right amount to have some fun, but not as formal as a tasting with 9 wines.  This past tasting it was Blue Mountain Gold Label Brut sparkling from Okanagan, BC,  Painted Rock Skaha Blend (Syrah / Cabernet Sauvignon blend) also from Okanagan, BC, and Gonzalez Byass Nutty Solera Oloroso Sherry from Spain.  The sparkling was paired with truffled popcorn and brown butter, the Skaha blend with a mushroom ravioli topped with Spanish almonds, and the Sherry with a creme caramel.

Rachelle talked about each wine, where it came from, the flavours you can expect from it, and how it was made, and then talked about which food pairing she selected for each wine.  Rachelle is both a chef and a Sommelier, so she can go into depth about both the food and the wine side, and why this pairing should work.  All I can tell you is the next time I watch a movie on Netflix at home, I’m opening a bottle of sparkling wine, and making some popcorn with truffle oil!  All the pairings were delicious, and did not overstuff your brain your stomach, so you had room to enjoy the rest of the evening, with a nice meal at TWB if you like, go home, or elsewhere.

The price for this event is extremely reasonable at $14, and there is limited seating, so it is best to sign up with your friends sooner than later.  Check out the pictures of the food and wine below, then sign up for the next Perfect Pairings event.
